Typical bathroom electrical faults

When it comes to electrical faults in the bathroom, there can be many different kinds of issues ranging from issues with appliances and plug sockets, through to general issues with lighting (for instance is your lighting installed at a safe distance from water?) and general electrical circuitry.

Electric faults and issues in a bathroom are particularly sensitive and potentially dangerous due the nature of having electrics in a wet and moist environment. And, it’s because of this that various regulations have been introduced over the last 30 years to ensure that the right electrics are installed in bathrooms and shower rooms correctly, and in the right place.

At Emergency Electricians, we provide 24 hour emergency support for electrical problems in bathrooms, your ensuite and other areas such as shower rooms.

When we arrive, we will work with you to understand the potential electrical issues and find a solution.

What sort of appliances do emergency electricians cover?

Support is provided for a range of bathroom appliances and electrical sockets. If you are unsure or have any questions, get in touch to see if we can help. Issues can occur with a range of appliances such as showers, shower extractors, heated towel rails, sockets and lighting.

Although shower extractor fans aren’t as big and imposing as electric showers or heated towel rails, they can quite often be a cause of electrical problems.

Some bathroom appliances can also create issues with electrical sockets and cause the fusebox to trip. In this article, we discuss the various issues that might occur with electrical devices and appliances in the bathroom, and what you can do about them.

If you are experiencing an electrical issue with a bathroom appliance such as a power shower, then it's recommended to contact emergency electricians straightaway.

Whilst there could be a fault with the appliance itself, there could also be issues with some electrical appliances causing an overload on the system and forcing the fusebox to trip. Why do fuseboxes trip I hear you ask. Well, the main reason why a fusebox trips or switch off certain circuitry in the property is to protect anyone in the home from an overload of electricity or a power outage that effects the safe electrical flow.

Here’s more information about fuse boards from 365 Trade Group.

Another frequent issue is when too many appliances are connected to the electrical system. In this instance, a new, upgraded fusebox might be necessary. Your local electrician will be able to test the system and assess if this is needed. You could, of course, call 365 Trade Group electricians on 0800 788 0629 or visit them here 365tradegroup.com who will be happy to help.

Electrical risks

The various electrical problems that might occur in a bathroom may also have dangerous side effects and various risks including issues such as an electric shock or lack of power during the night when it is dark.

An Emergency Electrician can help you to quickly address any wiring difficulties or problems with your electric circuits. It is important to contact professional electricians that can service your property as fast and as professionally as possible.

Main causes of bathroom electrical faults

There are various reasons why electrical faults might originate from a bathroom. Because of the nature of the bathroom and the way that it is used on a daily basis, there can often be a lot of water or moisture, either in the air or on surfaces. Water ingress can be very dangerous and can cause a device to fail, as well as result in short-circuiting.

Another frequent issue is the consumption of power within a home when multiple devices are powered on and working at the same time. Power showers, for example, can consume a lot of power in a very short period of time.

Having lots of power-hungry bathroom appliances on at the same time can cause an overload to the system and can cause a fuse box to trip.

Another common issue is when a device or appliance becomes faulty. Faulty electrical devices used in bathrooms need to be replaced as quickly as possible, otherwise, they can lead to frequent power cuts or loss of electricity in the home. If you have electrics and wiring, for example, that is very old and potentially faulty, then this should be replaced, straightaway.

We understand that it’s not always that simple if you don’t have an immediate replacement for a shower or LED lighting for example but, the longer you leave it to find a replacement, the greater the frustration and risks.

Faults with bathroom lighting – fault finding

Electrical fault finding of bathroom lights can often be an area of concern for residential homes and, depending on the type of issue, they are not as easy to fix as replacing other bathroom appliances, due to the way that they are integrated, or installed into the ceiling and wall space.

The usual solution to a lighting problem in a bathroom is the replacement of a lighting unit. If you are experiencing issues with your bathroom lights, then make sure to contact a 24 Hour Emergency Electrician, that can help you out.

Safety risks

There are potential risks when electric devices fail, or there are electrical problems originating from a bathroom.

If there are issues with electrical sockets or electrical appliances then there is a significant danger of an electric shock if a relative touches an appliance that's plugged in.

In this example, we advocate immediately turning off the power of any devices that might be faulty to ensure the safety of everyone in the home, and to prevent electric shock.

Other issues include the dangers of having no power at nighttime when it is dark.  In this example, not being able to navigate around the home, in the dark, can be harmful.

Finally, one other issue which can be caused as a result of electrical problems is harm to other electronic devices.  If there's a fault in the electrical system caused by one electric device, then this may have a knock-on effect on other devices that are connected to the exact electric circuitry.

What to do if you have a power cut or electrical emergency

Safety first, fix the issue second!

If you are going through an electrical emergency afterward always remember it is safety first, fix the issue next. If a person has been hurt or there is a risk of harm then take care of this first.  You may have to get emergency services and possibly isolate the person to prevent additional injuries. If you need help cutting off the power then call us immediately and typically, we'll be able to help you over the phone. Call 0800 788 0629

If you've got a power cut in UK then you might have to call 105

105 is the three-digit number to call if you've got a power cut in the UK or will have to report a power network safety issue.

It's also possible to telephone 105 if you spot damage to power lines and substations that may put you, or somebody else, at risk.

The 105 service was established in late 2016 and it is well worth making a note of the easy to consider the number.  It is a totally free service for those who live in England, Scotland and Wales - and a first for the UK's electricity market.  The memorable national number will help advise of any power problems locally and will explore any infrastructure issues that there could be.

Once you have addressed the ‘safety first' part, it’s time to ‘fix the issue second’. For a full assessment of the situation and to fix the issue, call us and we will work with you to get everything back to normal.

Top tips for avoiding electrical issues in your bathroom

Here are some top tips for preventing an electrical problem in your bathroom:

  • Handle electrical appliances with dry hands
  • Keep non-bathroom electrical devices away from bathrooms
  • Ensure you have a working smoke detector if something does go wrong
  • Check that flexible leads and appliances are in good shape
  • Don't attempt to clean or fix an appliance if it is still plugged in
  • Only have devices such as shower speakers in a bathroom that are rated as waterproof or fit for using in a bathroom environment
  • Do not leave electrical appliances running unattended
  • Check your plug sockets are not overloaded with too many electrical appliances as this can lead to overheating
  • Make sure light switches are a pull cord if they are installed in the bathroom, otherwise it needs to be switch that’s placed outside of the bathroom
  • Try to ventilate the bathroom as much as possible by having windows open
  • Make sure your extractor fan is working properly and removing water from the atmosphere

Advice for fixing RCD faults

What’s an RCD? RCD stands for “residual-current device”, or “residual-current circuit breaker”, and is a device that quickly breaks an electrical circuit to prevent serious harm from an ongoing electric shock.

If you are experiencing issues with your RCD then follow this advice:
  • To start with, unplug all of the appliances in the property and make sure all of the sockets are empty. Then attempt to reset the RCD.
  • If the RCD fails to operate (in other words, if the RCD resets back), a licensed electrical contractor such as us, must be engaged to check the RCD and replace it if needed.
  • Call 0800 788 0629

The button is only going to test the RCD if a power supply is connected. To make sure that the RCD is fitted to your house and performing properly, it needs to be tested at regular intervals.

We recommend that every RCD is tested every 3 months. Pressing the test button will simulate an earth leakage fault and indicates whether the unit is operating correctly. Once you have performed the test, all power is lost. To restore power all you need to do is move the "on/off" switch back to the "on" position.

Unfortunately, some electrical devices such as clocks and timing apparatus might need to be reset.

A quick overview of the RCD

As mentioned, RCD stands for a residual current device as the device has two rods. One is for live cable and the other for the ball neutral or, depending on the device it can be to wire a single-phase link. The role of the RCD is to compare the presence of live and neutral wires and to cut off power if there is an issue.

If some of the cables current isn't as it should be then this will cause the RCD to trip.

Single-phase and three-phase RCDs work in precisely the same manner. With a single-phase RCD, one cable is being compared to a different one but with a three-phase RCD, 3 cables are being compared to a neutral wire

When an RCD is being tested, it must return a correct result but not in terms of voltages. Real energy is recorded in voltages, however, when testing an RCD, the level of the current stays the same so that it can test the amount of current entering versus what is being returned. In other words, the returning current should be equivalent to the entering current. By analysing the current this way, the RCD helps detect any leakage in the current. If there is a leakage then this reflects an electrical issue, causing it to trip.

Top tips for looking after bathroom appliances (and saving electricity)

Saving electricity and looking after your appliances are great ways to ensure that your bathroom is a safe, comfortable place to use. Being energy efficient does not always mean a big change to your routine, it can often take just a few tiny adjustments to your lifestyle.

Here are some valuable tips to consider:

  • Don’t leave the shower on for longer than it needs to be. Turn it off as soon as you have finished
  • Buying a new appliance? Look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo. These more efficient appliances can save you over £35 a year.
  • If your extractor fan and light work on the same switch, then this can cost more money during the summer when you don’t need the light on. Similarly, it can cost more by having the extractor fan when you don’t need it on, but you need the lights. Consider having the lights and the extractor fan on a different switch
  • Leaving a room? Don't forget to turn off your lights and consider LED or energy saving bulbs. They last up to 10 times longer than traditional bulbs and use around 80% less energy.

We hope you find these tips useful. When it comes to using different electrical devices in a home, the more you look after them, the longer they will last, resulting in lower replacement costs and a reduced risk of an electrical problem in your home.

Can extractor fans lead to an electrical fault?

It’s possible. We rarely come across an issue where a ceiling or shower extractor fan has caused issues with the electric system in a house but extractor fans do fail over time.

If your shower extractor fan isn’t working, it most likely needs to be replaced by a qualified electrician.

Make sure when talking to an electrician to set the time that an extractor fans stays on for. If an extractor fan turns off immediately then there is a risk that moisture hasn’t been taken out of the atmosphere. This risks causing damp issues, not just with the electrics, but also with walls and the general surroundings.

Conversely, having an extractor fan on for too long can waste money as well as being an annoying sound you don’t want to hear too much.

How long your extractor fan should be on for will depend on the size and layout of your bathroom as well as the location and specification of the fan.

Fun Facts

In case you've called us for help and we are on our way, your electric issue should be sorted out very soon!  In the meantime, if you need to take your mind off what could be a stressful situation, here are some interesting facts to distract you!

1. Going through a bad spell?

Did you know what the word Electrician is often spelled wrong, even by some of our competitors! Over the years we have seen people ask for help from an electrison or urgent electrical help from an electrision. As we read things quickly, sometimes the human eye doesn’t notice when a letter is missing in the middle of a word. This means that many people won’t notice the mistake when a letter c or i is missing - or when two letters are the wrong way around. This means that you might have called an emergency electrian or a maintenance electrcian.

If you have kids, now is the time to distract by listing the many ways you could wrongly spell electrician!

2. So much training!

Electricians need to get a lot of experience, therefore there's no room for errors, and everything has to be carried out correctly.

The reason for such a very long training period is as, like a physician, an electrician needs to have the ability to figure out and "diagnose" the problem with the ideal solution.

Often they are up against dangerous situations because of the fact that many folks are not aware of the dangers of power or just how to manage it.

Not only does the electrician have to use his knowledge and expertise to enhance the issue but it must also be carried out in accord with the newest regulations and safety standards!

It's amazing to believe that at our Surbiton Emergency Electricians, we've got many years of experience, yet we compress all of this into a 2-hour call out guarantee and solving issues for a customer in a matter of minutes and hours!

3. How fit are electricians?

We can’t give you the answer to that but we do have a very physically challenging job!

Rarely getting the chance to perform some sit-down work, electricians are often on their feet. Climbing into attics and on top of roofs or moving underground and crawling into restricted places can be exhausting and requires a whole lot of body power to achieve that.

Bending and squeezing into small distances may be uncomfortable and isn't the job for someone who doesn't want to get devoted and maintain their body in tip top shape.

As well as physical fitness, mental fitness is also important. There's an outstanding amount of information which has to be picked up along with as few as four years of training as an apprentice until they could even experience some testing to become a Journeyman Electrician.

Math's needs become a skill, as well as the capability to read and comprehend blueprints, not just that but electricians possess impeccable memories and also will need to have the ability to memorise national and local codes and also execute their processes while still abiding by those regulations. Organisation is critical and fast thinking to solve a problem the moment it happens, since there isn't any alternative route when it has to do with power and fully qualified electricians understand how to control it and its own risks.

We hope you have enjoyed these fun facts. In summary, electricians have lots of years of experience and have to be both physically and mentally in shape - and if you need an electriction, we can help.

(Yes - we spelt electrician wrong on purpose).
