Safe electrical installations
There are specific requirements for safe electrical installations and the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) are the national UK standard to which all domestic and industrial wiring must conform. Created from the relationship between the British Standard (BS 7671) and the European and International Standards for electrical installations, the IET and ECS have collaborated to raise the professionalism within the industry.
These regulations are the national standard in the United Kingdom for electrical installation and the safety of electrical wiring in domestic, commercial, industrial, and other buildings, also in special installations and locations. The 18th Edition applies to all new electrical installations, and to any alterations or additions to existing systems.
However, installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions may not all be regarded as unsafe or indeed require upgrading. Make sure that you talk to a qualified and registered electrician about your individual requirements.

Safety standards for electrical wiring
There are specific requirements for safe electrical installations and the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) are the national UK standard to which all domestic and industrial wiring must conform. 17th Edition IET wiring regulations explained
Why are they important and how does it affect my property rewiring? The latest edition of the "Wiring Regulations" - the 17th Edition - was published in January 2008. The 17th Edition reflects significant changes from the 16th edition to both the technical content and the structure of the publication. Key changes in the 17th edition IET wiring regulations were created to align with European wiring regulation documents and include amo9ung other points:
- a change allowing a socket outlet in bathrooms (if 3ms from the edge of a bath or shower and RCD protected)
- extension of the Regulations to cover new special locations'
- exhibition shows, photovoltaic (pv) power supply systems, floor and heating systems, marinas and fairgrounds and amusements parks
- re-numbering and re-structuring of chapters to align with international standards and those created by the EU
"The Regulations" move from being the 16th to the 17th edition - a major shift in name and perception of its contents.
What's the difference between IEE and IET?
The IET is a new registered institution formed by the joining of the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) and the IIE (the Institution of Incorporated Engineers). Therefore the IET now owns all the branding of the IEE and can use that brand for publications. IEE will be phased out over the years when the IET becomes more and more widespread and better known as a brand name in its own rights.
Are Electrical Regulations and BS7671 needed if my house is rewired?
When working to British Standards, organisations are expected to use a quality management standard, health and safety standards, security standards, construction and energy standards as well as the standards that apply in their own industry. So 365 Trade Group ensure that all electrical rewiring for houses and commercial properties is done to meet current IET wiring standards.
British Standards are guidelines only, they are not enforceable by law, however individual organisations can insist that any products or services supplied comply with all recommendations contained in any given British Standard. This is certainly the case with the Electrical Regulations and BS7671.
